What Is Minor Oral Surgery?
Some teeth cannot be removed with a simple extraction. When a tooth is buried below the gum, has curved or fused roots, or has broken off at the gum line, a surgical approach is needed. Minor oral surgery allows us to carry out these more complex procedures safely at the practice, without a hospital referral in most cases.
We treat:
- —Impacted wisdom teeth, including those that are partially erupted or growing at an angle
- —Difficult extractions where roots are curved, fused or close to the nerve
- —Teeth broken off at or below the gum line
- —Buried or unerupted roots requiring surgical removal
Your specialist
Dr Zaneev Shirodkar (GDC: 193460) holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Oral Surgery (2023) and sees patients at the practice for surgical extractions and wisdom tooth removal. Where a case falls outside the scope of minor oral surgery, we will discuss referral options with you.
What to Expect
Assessment and X-rays
Dr Shirodkar reviews your X-rays and, where needed, requests a CBCT scan to plan the procedure precisely.
Local anaesthetic
The area is fully numbed. You will feel pressure during the procedure but not pain.
Surgical removal
A small incision is made, the tooth or root is sectioned if necessary, and removed with care to protect surrounding tissue.
Closure and aftercare
The site is stitched and you leave with written aftercare instructions. A follow-up appointment is included to check healing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it be painful?
No. The area is fully numbed using local anaesthetic before we begin. You may feel movement or pressure, but not pain. If you are nervous, please let us know in advance and we can discuss sedation options.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients recover well within one to two weeks. You may have some swelling and discomfort for the first few days, which is normal. We will provide full written aftercare instructions and a follow-up appointment is included.
Can I go to work the next day?
Many patients do. We generally advise taking the rest of the day off after the procedure. Whether you feel ready the next day depends on the complexity of the case and how you feel.
Why can't a standard extraction be done instead?
For impacted, buried or broken teeth a surgical approach is required to access the tooth safely. Attempting a standard extraction in these cases can risk damaging surrounding teeth, roots or nerves.
Will I need to go to hospital?
In the majority of cases, no. Dr Shirodkar is qualified to carry out minor oral surgery at the practice. If your case requires a hospital environment, we will discuss referral options with you.
