What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is needed when the pulp, the soft tissue inside the tooth, becomes infected or damaged due to deep decay, a crack, or trauma. If left untreated, the infection can spread and the tooth may need to be removed.
Treatment involves gently removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, sealing the space to prevent further infection, then restoring the tooth with a filling or crown.
Most patients say it's no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Root canal treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it.
Symptoms that may indicate you need treatment

What to Expect
Anaesthesia
Local anaesthetic applied, you shouldn't feel any pain during treatment.
Access
A small opening is made to access the inside of the tooth.
Cleaning
Infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped.
Sealing
The space is filled and sealed to prevent re-infection.
Restoration
The tooth is restored with a crown or filling to protect it long-term.

Is root canal treatment better than extraction?
In most cases, yes. Saving your natural tooth is preferable for bite, speech and jawbone health. Extractions often require implants or bridges to fill the gap, which adds cost and complexity.
How many appointments does root canal take?
Usually one to two visits lasting 45–90 minutes, depending on complexity. Molars take longer; front teeth are more straightforward.
Will I need a crown afterwards?
Often yes. A crown protects and strengthens the tooth after treatment, restoring its shape and appearance. We'll advise on what's right for your specific tooth.
How long will the tooth last?
With proper care, a tooth that's had root canal treatment can last 10–15 years or more. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are key.
