Dental Bridges
A fixed, natural-looking solution to replace one or more missing teeth, restoring your smile, bite and confidence.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge literally bridges the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap, called abutment teeth.
Bridges are fixed in place, unlike dentures, they don't come out. They look, feel and function very much like natural teeth, and can restore both appearance and chewing ability.
Why replace missing teeth?
- —Prevent adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap
- —Maintain jawbone density
- —Restore bite function and chewing ability
- —Improve appearance and confidence
- —Maintain facial structure
Types of bridge
Traditional bridges use crowns on both adjacent teeth. Maryland bridges (resin-bonded) require less preparation and are often used for front teeth. Implant-supported bridges are anchored by implants rather than adjacent teeth, the most stable option. We'll advise on the most suitable type for your situation.
It's worth noting that conventional bridges and Maryland bridges do not prevent bone loss at the site of a missing tooth. Only implant-retained bridges help preserve the underlying jawbone. We'll discuss the full implications of each option at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a dental bridge last?
The lifespan of a dental bridge depends on the type of bridge. A Maryland bridge typically lasts around 5–7 years, while a conventional bridge can last 10–15 years or more. Good oral hygiene, especially cleaning under the bridge with floss threaders or interdental brushes, significantly extends its lifespan.
Does having a bridge fitted hurt?
No, the preparation and fitting are carried out under local anaesthetic. You may experience some sensitivity for a few days afterwards, which resolves quickly.
What's the alternative to a bridge?
The main alternatives are dental implants (which don't require adjacent teeth to be prepared) and partial dentures (removable). We'll discuss all your options and help you choose the right solution.
Will my bridge look natural?
Yes, modern porcelain bridges are shade-matched to your surrounding teeth and crafted to look completely natural.
How do I clean under a bridge?
We'll show you how to use floss threaders or specialist interdental brushes to clean beneath the bridge and maintain the health of your gums underneath.
